After yesterday's all day driving we decided on foot traffic today, exploring the town of Shrewsbury. Lots of old buildings and bridges, city walls, gardens, churches, the river, all very pretty. Also a covered market with stores on the balconies.
Yep ... this sign outside a coffee shop sums it up...
The largest collection of op shops I've ever seen, we counted 10 in a few blocks without even trying.
Back home for lunch and decided it was such a nice afternoon that we would head into Wales and go to Powis Castle (National Trust rocks again!). Gorgeous gardens and castle, though Matthew would not have been impressed as photos were not allowed inside as the items are still in the current Lord's private collection. If they are going to do that they really need to supply postcards as mementos, or at least let you take pics in the kitchens and downstairs area. I get that you don't want the plebs taking photos of the bedroom where Prince Charles has stayed 5 times! So basically I overloaded on outside/garden pics instead.
The castle is on the side of a hill with 'layers' of stone/garden/lawn terraces heading down the hill, including an orangery on one level. Fabulous views across the valley too.
Amazing topiary sculpturing of 100+ year old trees into cloud-shaped hedges.
Of course, every genuine castle has to have peacocks.
And the most incredible poppy flowers I have ever seen.
Jennifer bought shorts and sandals today as she had only packed clothes for cooler weather. Guaranteed to get cold and rainy now!
Tomorrow off on another driving expedition.
