We stayed at a fabulous guest house near the ferry port. Not because of the building/quality of rooms (old but scrupulously clean) but because of the owner. She was in her 70's and put on a full breakfast, with home made bread, marmalade she made herself, all sorts of extras.
Tables all nicely set in a dining room with china teacups/saucers. There was a separate lounge area with TV. She does all the laundry herself as well. And managed all the computing, eftpos machines, etc, and collects people from the ferry on demand. Nothing was too much trouble for her to help us with. She's been doing it for over 50 years (30 years owning the business herself). Amazing lady.
Up early for the 7.30am ferry from Larne to Cairnryan. Pleasant trip with not many people on board. Someone with a sense of humour operating on board.
Nice views of Scotland as the ferry arrived.
The boat rotates on arrival, stirring up the shallow water, and all the seabirds come in a frenzy for things that are flushed to the surface.
Lots of roadworks, I guess you have to do it in your (alleged) summer as it's too miserable the rest of the year. Well, even MORE miserable. Very efficiently, though, there are traffic lights at each end of the single lane traffic instead of our stop/go men. Even better, this one had a pilot vehicle which travels at the head of each queue once the light turns green - stops idiots speeding through the roadwork.
I thought Malcolm had enough to organise with transport on this trip, but he must have called in some support for some of it.
Quick stop for lunch supplies at a huge Tescos. I bought these but so far not actually game to try them.
After the squirrel sign I found at an NT property I started taking notice of the various warning signs (in the red triangle) around the place. On today's trip there were a heap of odd ones (had to download some as my photos haven't worked given they are taken speeding along the motorway, but we really did see them all even the tank!).
We had a stop to eat lunch at Gretna Green in Scotland, one of my 'bucket list' stops as so many of the couples in the Regency romances junk I read elope to Gretna. What a disappointment, it has been touristed to ridiculous heights. Big food hall, lots of amusements, and the biggest souvenir shop I have ever seen. Got my photos but they weren't what I was expecting.
The blue sky on the ferry ride over didn't last, and the Yorkshire landscape looks just like I imagined it.
Our apartment for the night in York was terrific, right at the gate to the old city walls. They've converted an old two-storey building into a three-storey by 'inserting' a floor in the middle. And you know what that means ...
My favourite thing, lots of stairs. Nice building though. Loved the sense of humour in the cushions.
Had time for a very quick look at the walls before heading across the river for some late dinner.
Tomorrow back on the road for London.
